Repair or replace: how to decide

Every roofer has an answer to this question. Here is how to check it yourself.

Start with the numbers

In 2026 a new asphalt shingle roof on a Louisville home runs about nine to eighteen thousand dollars. A typical repair runs a few hundred to a couple of thousand. So the question is really: will a repair buy you enough years to be worth it?

Repair makes sense when

The roof is under about fifteen years old and the problem is in one place: a boot, a run of flashing, a patch of wind damage. The rest of the shingles still have their coating and lie flat. A repair here can buy five to ten more years.

Replacement makes sense when

The shingles are bald and curling across the whole roof. There are leaks in more than one area. The decking is soft in spots. Hail hit the whole thing and the insurer agrees. Patching a roof like this is money spent twice.

How to check for yourself

Ask any company for photos of the exact problem, and photos of the roof overall. A company that will not show you both is asking you to trust a sales number. Our free roof check gives you both, in a report you keep, with a plain note on the years left. Then the decision is yours, and we do either job: the repair, or the full replacement when the photos call for it.
